About FNB South
In late 1950, a group of investors began the work necessary to establish a new bank in Bacon County, Georgia. After approximately six months of planning, the application for a bank charter was granted on April 2, 1951. The Department of Banking approved authorization for the Citizens State Bank, Alma, Georgia, to begin the transaction of business on May 1, 1951.
The Directors, along with the shareholders decided to convert to a national bank and on January 2, 1974, approval was received. At that time the Citizens State Bank was converted to The First National Bank of Alma. In 1984, the shareholders of First National Bank decided to form a holding company. Applications were filed and on December 17, 1984, First Bank Shares of the South East, Inc. was approved as the holding company for First National Bank of Alma.
The bank operated in a small building until two adjacent buildings were purchased and in 1990 and reconstruction of the three old buildings began with completion of the new building on July 5, 1993.
On November 1, 1994, First Bank Shares of the South East, Inc. purchased three loan companies and built our first branch in Baxley, Appling County, Georgia which officially opened for business on December 1, 1997. In September 1995, First National Bank purchased the First Georgia Savings building and assets in Alma, Georgia. Currently the building is being used as a backup facility for the bank and houses a large conference room for bank and community use.
On January 1, 2001, The First National Bank of Alma went through another name change as a result of market expansion and approval was given for The First National Bank of Alma's name to be changed to FNB South.
